What an amazing week it's been for the filmmakers and GROW! We've met so many wonderful people - the gracious and dedicated cinephiles of Savannah, many talented students, hardworking festival volunteers, and gifted filmmakers from all over the world.

And then there is the Savannah Film Festival itself....

Where to begin? SCAD professor, Michael Chaney's Coffee Talks every morning were enlightening and fun along with a lot of panels led by industry professionals.

During the week we have seen an incredible 29 films and shorts.

What other festival would open with "The Artist," a 100 minute black and white silent film and end up on Friday night with the Directors Choice screening, the world wide premiere of "The Muppets"?

We hope to get back to The Savannah Film Festival again someday - it is by far, one of the best film festivals in the U.S.

Besides being a beautiful place to visit, the Montana CINE Fest offered a wonderful opportunity to view some really inspiring films from all over the world. Another plus was meeting the filmmakers.

Lisbeth produced Fjord, an amazing award winning film which was directed and shot by her husband. Through an agreement struck at the festival, she is also now acting as our agent for GROW! in Europe. We will be representing Fjord and another film, Winter Light in the U.S.

We're off to Nashville to help raise money for the Community Food Advocates' Field of Greens Fund.

The fund was started by members of the greater Nashville community who were concerned about the economic impact that the flood of May 2010 had on the sustainable farmers who supply the Nashville area with healthy delicious food. The fund is not limited to disaster relief, it also serves as a source for farmers needs to rebuild, expand and grow.

There will be mingling, snacks, GROW! screening (with intro by the filmmakers).

Following the screening there will be desserts, and a panel discussion with some young local farmers, a chef and the filmmakers.

Its all happening at 6:00 on October 6th.

Suggested donation is $15, (but you could give more!)

We're happy to report that $1000.00 dollars was raised at The Peachtree Road Farmers Market screening on June 11th.

Half of the funds went to the Farmers Market for annual operating costs. We donated $500 to the Emergency Farmers Fund which will provide immediate assistance to local farmers in crisis after natural disaster strikes. We're off to a good start!

The funny thing is, if the Peachtree Road Farmers Market existed 6 years ago, we might not have ever been inspired to make GROW!.

At screenings people often ask why we made this movie... The short answer is, we like to eat and we like to eat food that is good, clean, fair and fresh, purchased directly from the people who grow it.

When we moved to Atlanta from California in 2005, there weren't a lot of Farmers Markets. We started talking to the farmers and were surprised to discover that there just wasn't a lot of demand for locally grown and organic food. We decided to help by photographing the farmers, their farms and the food they grow. We hoped to help put a face on farming and make farmers into rock stars. Eventually, we decided to make a film about them.

We have watched this movement grow; there are now more farmers markets and more people growing our food. Its a great partnership, but its one that needs to be nurtured.

The Peachtree Road Farmers Market is hosting a benefit screening of GROW! this Saturday, June 11th at 1:00. Come on out and meet the filmmakers, along with some of the farmers.

Doors open at 12:15 for a delicious lunch provided by Yeah! Burger. Tickets are $15/advance, $20/at the door.

50% of the proceeds will go to the Emergency Farmers Fund, a fund we are establishing in conjunction with PRFM which will provide immediate aid to GA farmers when disaster strikes. The other half of the money raised will go towards PRFM's annual operating expenses, fees that are often passed onto the farmers.

Slow Foods Athens presents GROW! at Ciné at 7:00 p.m. The filmmakers and a few of the Farmers from GROW! will be there to talk about the film. Proceeds benefit Slow Foods Athens.

To celebrate, Farm 255 is offering a special Seasonal Prix Fixe Dinner before the show featuring the bounty of Full Moon and other local farms. Seating is limited and offered at 5:30, 5:45 and 6:00 p.m. The price is $30 per person which includes tax and a ticket to the show.

A GROW! Movie Event

GROW! makes its Atlanta area debut on Saturday April 9th at a special screening hosted by Parsley's Catering and the Gardens at Kennesaw Mountain, in Marietta, sponsored in part by Whole Foods Market. Chef Dave Larkworthy and 5 Seasons Brewery will also be participating. Enjoy a farm-fresh family-style dinner outdoors, musical entertainment by Little Country Giants (featured on the film's soundtrack) and of course an outdoor screening of GROW!

Proceeds from the event will help us get the word out (Who knew Georgia Farmers were so hot!) and take GROW! on the road. Over the next year, we will be taking GROW! to film festivals and screenings across the U.S. and Europe. In order to do this, we need funds to cover festival fees, travel, promotional materials, shipping costs and a lot of other stuff. Everything so far has been self financed with the help of friends, the kindness of strangers and support from a couple of big organizations. We continue to follow this business model because we are a small, independent, grass roots filmmaking team.

Spread the word, share the love!

We're into our final stretch of filming and now we need a little help. So far, with the support of a few friends, our film has been self financed. We're looking to raise some funding for post-production costs such as editing, color correction, sound mixing, music production and licensing.

We've launched an on-line fundraising campaign at Kickstarter and we're asking for your help.

Kickstarter is an online platform for crowd funding creative projects.

Kickstarter is all or nothing: if a project does not reach its stated funding goal within the time chosen, no money changes hands.

We have set our goal at $10,000.00 and the duration at 30 days.

Exactly two months ago we made our first visit to Hope Grows in Sylvania, GA. If you recall, we put together a little clip documenting the arrival of their baby turkeys. My, how they've grown... Here we show them in their new surroundings, foraging in the pecan grove, getting ready for Thanksgiving.
We had also put together another clip called Hog Wash, featuring Pork and Chop. Those pigs were at the processor when we arrived so we can't attest to their good taste, but if they are anything like Hope Grows' chickens, the meat is guaranteed to be tasty.

Marc Sommers has been a strong supporter of the local food movement for quite some time. As the chef and owner of Parsley's he sources organic meats and produce from many of the small farms within a hundred miles of Atlanta. But thats not the only reason we've chosen him as GROW! Hero #3....

Marc heard about GROW! and our fundraising efforts thru Paige and Justin at Serenbe. He contacted us and offered to host a Farm To Table Dinner for 100 at his event space - The Gardens at Kennesaw. We're planning on a Spring Dinner with farm fresh food prepared by local chefs, a GROW! movie screening, GROW! farmers, and live music performed by Little Country Giants!

Last week we spent a couple of days with Reid and Caroline who manage the 4 acre organic garden. The garden was started a year and a half ago by Bethesda to help provide the students a cutting edge practical work experience. They run a small CSA plus a weekly Farm Stand on site.

Last week we went down to Savannah to visit our friends, the Coastal Organic Growers at their monthly meeting and potluck. One of the best reasons to go is the food, which there was too much of this time to even begin to talk about. We had to fill our plates three times just to taste everything and then there were the desserts which also required repeat visits to the groaning board. All the food is prepared by the farmers, fresh from their farms.

Another reason to go is to catch up with this great bunch of growers who are growing everything from peanuts to pecans, Vidalia onions, chickens, hogs, vegetables, berries, flowers and even the best organic compost around.

After dinner they surprised us with a generous donation for our film, so we would like to take this opportunity to say Thank You and welcome another GROW! movie sponsor.

Although we had promised ourselves and you, a break from fundraising talk for now, so many exciting things have been happening its hard to keep quiet. We hope to be announcing a new corporate sponsor as well as a big fundraising event for the fall soon, but in the meantime....

We are proud to announce Cha-Bella Restaurant in Savannah, GA as GROW! hero #2 for offering not one, but two, generous premiums for our Kickstarter fundraising campaign which we will be launching in a couple of weeks. The first is a 6 week subscription to their weekly Farmbox program and the other is a 4 course dinner for 6 people complete with wine pairing. The thing that makes this so amazing, besides their generosity, is the fact that we've never met these kind souls. They heard about our project on Hope Grows' Facebook page and offered to help.
